This photo is quite amazing. When I was 10 or 11, my father took me to Iowa, where most of my extended family resides. We went to Ottumwa just one time, and to this one restaurant one time. They served what they called a Canteen burger, which is basically a hamburger that isn’t compacted and compressed, so all the meat is just loose like a taco. My father said he ate their a lot as a child growing up in Ottumwa. It’s honestly the only thing I remember from that whole trip to Iowa!

So I saw this photo on dearphotograph.com… I saw the yellow building with the Coca Cola sign, and just vaguely thought “that kinda looks like that Canteen place in Iowa, but there’s no way”. Imagine my amazement when I enlarged it. IT IS that Canteen place! This is a tiny hole in the wall place, in a tiny hole in the wall town! What are the chances? Also, how the HELL did I remember that? My memory of my childhood is rapidly fading, and I only recall little flashes here and there these days. But somehow this tiny little building that I only saw once in my life stuck out to me. Kinda blows my mind.

Dear Photograph,
Wishing we could share a Canteen, just one more time.
